C-TRAN to Test Collision Avoidance System

The Washington State Transit Insurance Pool, and their re-insurer Munich RE, have initiated a pilot program with six Washington state transit agencies, including C-TRAN, to test the effectiveness of collision avoidance technology.

The collision avoidance system works through the use of several cameras mounted on the outside of the bus, providing several extra sets of eyes for the coach operator. When it appears that the bus may be approaching another vehicle or pedestrian too quickly or closely, a warning system located inside the bus, will sound the appropriate warning and provide a visual cue for the driver to stop or slow down.

Rosco Vision Systems is the manufacturer in charge of installing the MobilEye system, which began at the end of August, on these five C-TRAN bus routes:

  • Route 32 Hazel Dell and Evergreen/Andresen
  • Route 65 Parkrose Limited
  • Route 71 Highway 99
  • Route 80 Van Mall/Fisher’s
  • Route 105 I-5 Express

Other transit agencies currently testing the new system include:

  • Pierce Transit
  • Community Transit
  • Spokane Transit
  • Intercity Transit
  • King County Metro

Data will be collected over a 12 week period, and will conclude at the end of November. For questions or comments, please contact the C-TRAN Customer Service Office at (360) 695-0123.
