Vancouver, WA: Alan Halgren, one of C-TRAN’s longest-tenured coach operators, is retiring this week after 37 years behind the wheel. He’ll drive his final shift on Friday, June 29.
Halgren’s time at C-TRAN spans the agency’s entire history. He was hired shortly before C-TRAN officially began service in July 1981. At that time, C-TRAN had just 25 drivers, including Halgren. It had a motley fleet of buses inherited from Vancouver Transit, C-TRAN’s predecessor, and purchased from elsewhere. The adult one-zone fare was 50 cents.
Today, C-TRAN has more than 250 fixed-route and paratransit drivers, 29 routes and a total ridership of more than 6 million trips in 2017. Halgren has remained a steady presence through it all.
“I love C-TRAN,” Halgren said during a recent interview marking national Transit Driver Appreciation Day. “I love the work that we do. I love to serve. It gives me a sense of joy.”
Halgren has driven routes all over Clark County during his time with C-TRAN. He’s currently on Route 6 (Fruit Valley/Grand). Halgren says he enjoys serving the community and helping people get to where they need to go.
